About This Article

The post-war period saw the greatest expansion in prosperity in human history, as well as a vast expansion of new opportunities to whole groups of people who had never had much choice in their lives before. This progress meant that, while there was a great deal of injustice and prejudice built into society, the few decades following World War II were a time of tremendous hope. In no period within this time was this truer than in the 1960s and 1970s. Old barriers and assumptions fell away rapidly, as people who had never expected to live long, healthy and free lives began to see that it might be within their grasp.

This shift toward civil rights coincided with a great deal of churn in world events, as new technologies, companies and even nations were born in swift succession. There was a great deal of conflict, and progress was so rapid and all-encompassing that, at the time, it seemed inevitable it would surely last forever.

Whether or not you lived through the 1960s and 1970s, that time familiar through books, movies and the stories of today's grandparents. How well do you recall these key events? It's time for a stroll down memory lane!
