About This Quiz
Each spring, 30 teams across Major League Baseball gear up in their baseball uniforms as they prepare for the action that will continue throughout the summer and, for the lucky few, into the fall. As for fans, they get to pull those baseball jerseys and hats back out to root on their favorite team as they compete for a playoff spot. How well do you know both your team, its rivals and every other franchise across the league? There's no better way to find out than by taking this quiz.
For over a century, teams in the majors have been competing against one another for the entertainment of fans everywhere. During the course of that time, certain teams have moved cities and other teams have changed their names and looks around to better fit their ball club's needs. That might make identifying some of these teams a little more difficult, but unless you haven't seen a game in 30 years, most of these teams have remained relatively unchanged.

With 27 championships, the most of any MLB team, the New York Yankees have a fan base that expects to at least compete for a title every season. However, the Yankees haven't been to the World Series since 2009, leaving fans to question the direction of the organization.
Derek Jeter, the former Yankees legend, is co-owner and CEO of the Miami Marlins, a role he took over in 2017. Jeter played a major part in trading Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees after he was hired, a move that was heavily criticized considering Stanton was coming off an MVP season.
The Athletics, located in Philadelphia at the time, won the first World Series in franchise history in 1910. That season, they defeated the Chicago Cubs in five games under the guidance of Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack.

The Los Angeles Angels played their first season of baseball at Wrigley Field in 1961. The team competed well during their inaugural season, finishing with a 70-91 record but failed to make the playoffs.
The Washington Nationals entered the 2019 MLB Playoffs as a wild card team but pushed through the National League to reach the World Series. The series went all seven games, but the Nationals squeezed out a victory in game seven by winning 6-2.
Since being added as an expansion team in 1961, the Texas Rangers have yet to win a World Series championship. They competed twice in the World Series in 2010 and 2011, but neither team came out victorious.

In the early '70s, the Cincinnati Reds put together a dominant roster known as "The Big Red Machine." The team reached four World Series behind stars like Pete Rose, Joe Morgan and Johnny Bench.
The Chicago Cubs reached the 2016 World Series after a 71-year drought without winning the NL Pennant. The team had also gone 108 years without winning a World Series, the longest drought in MLB history.
The Toronto Blue Jays smelled their first hint of success in the middle of the '80s, but they wouldn't actually capitalize on it until they hired Cito Gaston as their manager in 1989. Under Gaston, the team won back to back World Series in '92 and '93.

Having not won a World Series since 1948, the Cleveland Indians currently have the longest championship drought in MLB. They did reach the World Series in 2016, but lost to the Chicago Cubs.
The Milwaukee Brewers play home games in Miller Park, which is named after the Miller Brewing Company. The park's name is a representation of the thriving brewing industry that Milwaukee is known for.
The Colorado Rockies have yet to win a West Division title, but the team has reached the playoffs five times as a wild card addition. They even advanced to the 2007 World Series, but lost to the Boston Red Sox.

The Boston Red Sox made probably the worst decision in franchise history when they traded Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees following the 1919 season. Ruth went on to become a franchise legend for the Yankees, winning four titles with the team and setting the MLB home run record.
"Hammerin'" Hank Williams was probably the biggest baseball star to ever play for the Atlanta Braves. Williams was a home run threat anytime he stepped up to the plate and finished his career with the all-time home run record, which has since been broken.
The Arizona Diamondbacks were added as an expansion team in 1998 and had already won their first title by 2001. That championship made the Diamondbacks the fastest expansion team in league history to win a title.

The Chicago White Sox damaged the game of baseball in 1919 when several players decided to throw the World Series as part of a gambling operation. The series became known as the "Black Sox Scandal" and resulted in the permanent suspension of eight MLB players.
Every MLB fan knows that New York City is a Yankees town, but for a stint in the '80s, the New York Mets were the team to watch. As the Yankees tried to rebuild, the Mets reached the World Series in 1986, defeating the Boston Red Sox in a seven-game classic.
The Kansas City Royals play home games in Kauffman Stadium, where they have been located since 1973. The ballpark is named after the first owner of the Royals, Ewing Kauffman. It was initially named Royals Stadium until the name was changed in 1993.

Aside from Jackie Robinson, who never played for the team, the Baltimore Orioles have six retired numbers. The first player to receive that honor was Frank Robinson, who played for the Orioles from 1966 until 1971 and managed the team from 1988 until 1991.
The Tampa Bay Rays hired former MLB player Tom Foley as a coach in 2001. Though he never became manager, Foley was the longest-tenured coach for the organization when he decided to step away from coaching in 2017.
No team in the National League has more World Series titles than the St. Louis Cardinals, who currently have 11 championships. Their most recent title came in 2011 when they defeated the Texas Rangers in seven games.

The Detroit Tigers are the oldest team in the American League to maintain the same name while also remaining in the same city. The team has moved parks several times, however, and are currently playing home games in Comerica Park.
The San Francisco Giants played in one of the strangest World Series in baseball history when they competed against their crosstown rival, the Oakland Athletics, in 1989. The series was characterized by an earthquake that ripped through San Francisco, forcing a ten-day game delay. The Giants were swept in the series.
Between 2017 and 2019, the Houston Astros won three straight AL West Division titles and two AL Pennants. In that stretch, the team walked away with one World Series championship in 2017 when they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The legendary Puerto Rican player Roberto Clemente played for the Pittsburgh Pirates throughout his entire career from 1955 until 1972. In 1966, Clemente became the first Latin American player to win the NL MVP award, one of many accomplishments for the Hall-of-Famer.
The Dodgers were once located in Brooklyn, where they were a beloved team until leaving the city after the 1957 season. The move to Los Angeles was made after New York City refused to allow the Dodgers to build a new stadium to replace Ebbets Field.
The Minnesota Twins franchise gets its name from "The Twin Cities" located in Minnesota. Those cities are Saint Paul and Minneapolis, where the Twins are located, and both cities make up a large metropolitan area covering two sides of the Mississippi River.

It took the Seattle Mariners 15 years to post a winning record when they went 83-79 during the 1991 season. However, the team didn't actually reach the playoffs until 1995 when they won their first West Division title.
Though the team was established in '69, the San Diego Padres have only reached the playoffs five times in franchise history. In two of those years, '84 and '98, the Padres advanced to the World Series but couldn't walk away with a championship in either year.
After the Washington Nationals failed to offer Bryce Harper the contract he demanded in 2018, the Philadelphia Phillies stepped in and offered him the biggest contract in Major League Baseball at the time. The contract ran for 13 years and was worth $330 million.
