Yes, in the past there have been stories and omens associated with albino animals. But today, science tells us that the allure and beauty of these rare animals can be explained through the diversity of the gene pool. Agreed, not as romantic, but interesting nevertheless. It works this way: albinism is a genetic disorder where the animal lacks melanin. This means there is an absence of pigment or color in their skin, hair, and eyes. You'll notice that some of these photos you'll see in this quiz are actually leucistic animals, not albino, which is a partial loss of pigmentation. In most cases, the pigment cells in the eyes are not affected by the condition. But the snowy white appearance is just as awe-invoking.
Whether albino or leucistic, it's not an advantageous situation for the animals; they stand out from the pack with no ability to use camouflage to hide from predators. And those that are predators, and not prey, die from starvation because their would-be quarry see them coming and escape. To make matters worse, when it comes to mating, many are outcast by their peers. Plus, the red-eyed albinos often have vision problems and experience sensitivity to the sun. Whether it's science or lore, the more you know about these milky beauties, the more amazing albinos you'll want to see. View them all in this one-of-a-kind quiz now.
