There is something special about them, that is for sure.
Big, loud, bold, brash ... and that's just the drivers of pickups! Just kidding. Modern-day pickups, especially those found in the United States, are certainly large and in charge. And they need to be. These are not only daily runners but working vehicles, be it on a farm, at a construction site ... OK, sometimes sitting in a lot outside a corporate office.
Even the Japanese-made truck makers, for example, have followed the 'bigger is better' route when trying to sell their trucks in the United States. And many other foreign automakers have followed the trend as well.
But let's look back at a little history before we set your task before you. When was the first pickup made commercially available in the United States? Well, it should really not come as any surprise to you that Henry Ford had a hand in developing the first vehicle of this sort.
And it was his trusty old Ford Model T that was converted into a truck version simply known as the Runabout. This was in the mid-1920s. And the rest, as they say, is history.
So let's test your knowledge now on these versatile vehicles. But not American models. We'll use foreign models, some of which are built in the States and others which if you want them, would need to be imported.
This Toyota pickup has been available in the United States since 1999. By producing the Tundra, Toyota became the first Japanese company to produce an American-sized pickup. It is available as a regular 2-door cab, 4-door double cab and crewmax.
A sport utility truck, the Ridgeline was first marketed by Honda in 2005. It is currently in its second generation and is powered by a 3.5 liter V6 engine.

A modified Mercedes G Wagon, the Brabus G-Class AMG is unique in the fact that it has six wheels. It was manufactured for a two-year period from 2013 to 2015.
Designed by Walter De Silva, the Amarok has been marketed by the German company since 2010. This rear-wheel drive vehicle is available as a single cab, double cab and has a range of gas or diesel powerplant options.
This compact pickup truck was marketed by Datsun and then Nissan from 1955 to 1997. There were numerous versions with the 620 fairly popular in America in the 1970s.
Also known as the Bighorn, the Trooper was produced over two generations from 1981 to 2002. The off-road credentials of the Trooper are borne out by the fact that these models won a number of international off-road races including the marathon section of the 1994 Paris-Dakar rally.
The Nissan Titan has a few different loadouts. One of these, the Pro-4x option was a specifically designed off-road package that turned the Titan into a more than useful off-road vehicle. The Titan also has a very effective 5.6 liter V8 engine.
The Tata TL was first released in 1988 but was originally known as the 206. The name changed to the 207DI in 2002. It is powered by a range of diesel engine options from 2.0-liters to 3.0-liters.
Marketed between 2007 and 2011, the Massif was a 4x4 aimed at the military market. Close to 8,000 were made. The Massif was powered by a 3.0-liter straight-four diesel engine.
Based on the Actyon SUV by SsangYong, the Actyon Sports is pickup version. It is available with as either a 2WD or 4WD and features both diesel and gasoline engine options.
The generation two model specifically is ranked by many as one of the top off-roaders ever made. Not only are they excellent in tough terrain but they are reliable, an important factor when you are far from the nearest mechanic when something goes wrong.
With a bolt on frame body, the Armada is powered by a 5.6 liter V8 Nissan engine. This produces 390 horsepower and 401 pound/feet of torque. It offers a unique 4-wheel drive system that will only send power to the back wheels on flat surfaces. In off-road situations, all power is fed through the front wheels.
Produced in India for the global market, the Scorpio was first marketed in 2002. It is currently in its second generation which is powered by either a gas or turbodiesel engine. Although it was intended to market the vehicle in America, the deal fell through.

The Hyundai Porter, a larger pickup truck designed for carrying equipment, goods or other cargo has been marketed by the Korean company since 1977. It is currently in its fourth generation and was the best selling vehicle in South Korea in 2016.
Marketed in the subcompact class, the aim of the Publica was to give the Japanese public a cheap family car. Available in a number of configurations, including a station wagon, convertible, coupe and pickup, the Publica was built from 1961 to 1978. The last version, known as the Toyota 1000, was also marketed outside Japan.
An excellent off-road vehicle, the Nissan Navarra entered the market in 1997 and has become a very popular pickup option.
Also marketed under the name Kingswood, the Belmont was produced in Australia from 1968 to 1984. It was available as a pickup truck or Ute (the Australian term for pickup) until 1974 and then the badge was only used on sedans and station wagons.
A Toyota pickup available in the United States until 1995 and still sold in world markets, the Hilux went into production in 1968 and is currently in its eighth generation.
This double cab pickup is made by Renault. It is a variant of the Duster SUV and is powered by either a 1.6-liter or 2.0-liter engine.
As part of the supermini class, the Corsa was first introduced into Europe in 1982. This model has remained very popular and is currently in its fifth generation, which includes a pickup/utility model.
First marketed in 2008 by Holden in Australia, the Colorado is a pickup truck (or Ute as the Australians like to call it.) It comes as both a 4x2 and 4x4 option each powered by a 2.8-liter diesel engine through a 6-speed gearbox.
Certainly one of Toyota’s better off-roaders, the 4Runner is powered by a 4.7-liter V8 engine. Not only is the 4Runner a very capable off-road machine, it has that excellent Toyota reliability. One negative, however, is the limited clearance which can be overcome by thoughtful, clever driving.
Introduced by General Motors-owned Isuzu in 2003, the D-Max is built on the same platform as the Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon. The D-Max is available as a 2-door cab, 2-door utility, 4-door cab and 4-door utility. There have been two generations of the D-Max to date.

This rear-wheel-drive pickup truck was first introduced by Great Wall Motors in 2004. Built with a 4-door configuration, power comes from a 2.3-liter Toyota gasoline engine that produced around 103 brake horsepower.
The Bongo is available as either a pickup truck or a cabover van. This Mazda stalwart was first released in the 1960s. By 1999, the popularity of the Bongo had seen a fourth generation released and this is still marketed by the company today. It also appeared under other famous vehicle badges including Ford and Nissan, often country dependent.
Mercedes-Benz has offered the Unimog model since the 1940s. It comes in a range of configurations and is used in farming as well as other industries. The pickup variety was very popular in the United States in the 1980s.
