The NBA draft pick, which dates back to 1947, is an annual process which involves the selection of eligible basketball players to join the National Basketball Association. The first pick is done by the winning team of the NBA draft lottery. Rules for this event states that in order for a player to be considered eligible they must be at least nineteen years of age. They must also have completed basketball eligibility at an American high school and must be one year removed from graduation.

Since the introduction of this event, 71 players have made the first pick. Among this list, eleven have won the NBA MVP award. This includes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who holds the highest record of six wins. Others include LeBron James and Magic Johnson who are four-time and three-time winners respectively. Another seven of those number one picks, which includes Shaquille O’Neil, Andrew Bogut and Glenn Robinson were awarded an NBA title.

The draft pick is also open to international players who must comply with slightly different rules. In 1978, Mychal Thompson of The Bahamas became the first international player to be drafted first overall.
