The Seven Kingdoms in Westeros have been divided into various sizes and split so that each of the noble families got a share. Most of the power stayed with the King who sat on the Iron Throne, but some lay with the great houses who ruled over the constituent regions.
At the beginning of the series, there were nine Great Houses: Arryn, Baratheon, Greyjoy, Lannister, Martell, Stark, Targaryen, Tully, and Tyrell, but as the seasons passed some of these houses did not survive. There were also other houses which were not as noble as the nine but included Clegane, Reed, Tarly, Tarth, Mormont, and Bolton. We also saw the emergence of new houses, namely Baelish.
In the series, some of these houses have engaged in an all-out war for power while others teamed up to take down their common enemies. Allegiances shifted, promises were broken, and people viewers questioned whether their favorites would make it to both the end of the season and the series.
