Are you an expert on Mormonism? Let's find out!
Mormonism was founded in the 1820s by Joseph Smith in New York. After its founding, the church moved steadily westward toward Utah. However, church leaders were not originally headed to Utah. Because of their beliefs, Mormons were driven out of other states and finally settled in Utah, where they developed a somewhat isolationist society.
After many years of war and persecution, the Mormon church initiated a campaign that was designed to help the world around them become more accepting of their practices. Yet, in the 1960s and the 1970s, the tendency of society to move away from the sanctity of the family led the church to draw back a bit.
Today, Mormonism, mostly known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, attempts to strike a balance between encouraging strict adherence to traditional church values and integration into the surrounding world. Through strong leadership and a focus on family, the church has managed to more than double over the last 50 years or so, with members spread across the United States and the world.
