The Crusades were a series of holy wars fought from 1095 to 1291 throughout Europe and the Middle East. Although the stated goal of the Crusades, started by the Christians, was to regain control of the Holy Land and the holy sites in that area, many historians believe that the actual goal of the Crusades was to eliminate all but Christianity from the religious practices of people all over the world. In reality, the goals of the Crusades likely varied according to the individuals who fought in them.
The Crusades were extremely violent and bloody, and, officially, they lasted for almost 200 years. After the official end of the Crusades in 1291, smaller battles continued to break out throughout Europe and the Middle East. Each of the Crusades, there were nine, resulted in a sort of tug of war, back and forth between the Christians and the Muslims, but the Christians ultimately lost the Crusades.
