A boy band is defined as a singing group that consists of male singers. In the past, boy bands were known to be made up of only young men, but older male singers have done it, and have been successful too. The one thing that differentiates a boy band from a rock band is that members of boy bands do NOT usually play instruments. And while there are some who break the rules, for the most part, this one is adhered to.
The origin of boy bands isn't that clear, but in the 19th century, a cappella barbershop quartets were a thing. Fast forward to the '60s, where the Jackson 5 and the Osmonds ruled the music world; they weren't called boy bands (the term had not been coined yet), but the two groups did help make the mold for the groups who came after them.
Today a boy band can be the result of anything from church groups, childhood or high school friends, to singing competitions that add solo singers together (see One Direction). And while they may seem like a dying breed, they are still very much appreciated, especially by young women across the world. Do you think you know enough about music to name these boy bands from just a picture?
