Joint Special Operations Command oversees SEAL Team Six missions.

The name SEAL Team Six was disbanded in 1987, and its formal name is DEVGRU. It's one of the United States military's premier counterterrorism units.

While fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, SEAL Team Six joined CIA operatives in an initiative called the Omega Program, which allowed them greater latitude in hunting enemies.

Each assault squadron is divided into three troops (commanded by lieutenant commanders), and troops are divided into smaller teams.

In a HALO (high altitude, low opening) jump, SEALS freefall close to the ground before opening their parachutes.

The deadliest day in SEAL Team Six history was Aug. 6, 2011. Thirty-eight people were killed, including 15 SEAL Team Six members, when a Chinook helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan.

Most information concerning SEAL Team Six or DEVGRU is classified, and details of its activities are not usually commented on by either the White House or the Department of Defense.

Richard Marcinko is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL commander and Vietnam War veteran. Marcinko was tasked with creating and commanding SEAL Team Six.
