About This Quiz

Do you remember the Alamo? Do you know what Texas' marketing slogan means when it says (with apologies to the grammar gods) that the state is "Like a whole other country?" Grab a bowl of chili and a Shiner Bock and try this quiz!

Most Americans are usually somewhat proud of their home state. For some of us, it's not the state where we were born but the state where we grew up, or where we spent most of our lives. Texans are the ultimate expression of that pride. Everywhere Texans go, we identify ourselves proudly.

Of course, there are also some preconceived notions about what it means to be a Texan. During the early '80s, a Texan abroad in Europe could be expected to answer whether he or she knew J.R. Ewing and how many oil wells were in the backyard.

While media characterizations range from mocking to heroic, the actual history of Texas is truly fascinating. It was an independent republic for a while. It was a part of Mexico for a while, too, before a band of hardy Texans decided they wanted to determine their own fates and fought a bloody war against the Mexican Army.
