How orderly is your garden?

I like to keep things neat and organized, so I know my plants are getting the right water, sunlight, and nutrients.

I build new structures for my plants any chance I get. Some are on the walls; others hang from the ceiling. I also have a hydro garden in the kitchen.
I grow a lot of vegetables, so I need to know where everything is. But they don't like to be smothered, so I let nature take its course and prune back when necessary.

My garden is lush and filled with flowers. I love the summer perfumes, so I fill my house with lilacs and lilies.

Where do you get the planters for your garden?

I'm a regular at the local nursery.

I love to make my own pots and hangings!
I inherited them from the gardeners in my family who came before.

I use whatever planter will fade into the background and better display my flowers.

When bugs get into your garden, what do you do?

I started a garden because I love the plants, but now I love the bugs too!

I only plant trees and flowers that help the local environment.
We're all living in this world together. I don't bother them; they don't bother me.

I'm putting in butterfly bushes this spring!

What would be the perfect plant for a gift?

Aloe vera — it has many uses and is easy to care for.

Succulents! They're unique and beautiful, and they can add something special to a home.
Herbs! Herbs are easy to care for, and they can take any dish up to the next level!

What fruits or vegetables will you grow in your garden this year?

Tomato plants — they're hearty, prolific and delicious.

Pumpkins! Picking pumpkins is a ton of fun — how cool would it be to do at home?
Hot peppers! Peppers are fun to grow on their own, but I like dishes with a little zing!

Potatoes! There's nothing quite like potato soup on a cold night, and they're fun and satisfying to grow!

Chamomile — there's nothing like homemade tea!

Bergamot — it adds a unique and delicious flavor, and it has benefits in healing!
Lemon balm — it smells great and the bees love it!

Creepers, climbers and vine plants can add something special to any space. What kind will you be growing?

Hops! There's something so interesting about growing a plant we'll ultimately drink!

Chocolate vines smell like chocolate, so that's perfect for me!
Classic purple wisteria is simply lovely to look at and smell.

Why did you first start gardening?

It's my way of bringing the great outdoors closer to home!

I wanted to give back to the Earth and create environments for the insects and animals to enjoy.
It's a long-standing family tradition.

I love the beauty and sweetness of having fresh flowers in the house.

I'd love a little of all the environmentally diverse types so I could experiment with different plants.

Something Mediterranean, with lots of room for color and growth
English weather! A soft drizzle makes for a lush garden.

A city! There's something special about nature in an urban setting.

If you have enough space, what kind of trees will you cultivate in your garden?

New redwoods — their lineage is fascinating.

A weeping willow — there's just nothing quite like it.
A dragon tree — really, how cool are they?

A Douglas fir — they're great at absorbing CO2 and protecting our air.

If you only had a small balcony garden in the city, what kind of flowers would you grow?

Gazanias — they're bold and beautiful and make a statement.

Lantana — they're totally unique and strikingly beautiful.
Sunflowers — bees love them and they give passersby something lovely to enjoy!

How do you learn about plants or decide what to plant next?

I do a lot of research beforehand and base my next planting schedule on what has worked in the past.

Whatever comes my way goes into the garden! I love taking cuttings, growing from kitchen scraps and visiting seed libraries!
I like plants that can be used, so I tend toward herbs and vegetables, depending on the season.

I pick the plants that make me smile.

What does the perfect day in your garden look like?

I get to experiment with new types of seeds and try out new hydroponic planting systems.

I get to create unique and beautiful standing beds and fill them with my favorite plants.
I get to pick fruits and vegetables from my trees and bushes and spend the day carefully cultivating next year's seeds.

I plant rows and rows of strikingly beautiful flowers and pick a few for my kitchen table. I add a butterfly bush. The air is sweet.
