Nursery rhymes are poems, songs and stories which incorporate rhymes usually at the end of every sentence. They were initially told to children as a method of helping them to fall asleep, but as time has passed, they can be heard at any time during the day.
Although the term "nursery rhyme" did not come about until the late 18th century, many of them existed long before it, specifically in parts of England. Some of the rhymes had hidden meanings, and there were also those which were based on real-life characters and events which were often forbidden to speak about.
