Apex predators sometimes referred to as alpha or top predator, is a term used when a type of animal that is known to hunt prey is at the top of the food chain, meaning that other animals rarely if at all prey on it. They exist in every ecosystem and play a vital role, often maintaining the balance between the populations of other predators and their prey. 

It has often been debated that humans are apex predators, not only because they hunt other animals, but because they have also pushed other species out of their homelands. The term "apex predator" has become so popular that we have also used to refer to people who are at the top of their games and will do anything to stay at the top.
