The story follows the adventures of Wei Wuxian and his unlikely friend Lan Wangji in a world long-forgotten and mysterious. There are magic and clan rivalry, treachery and lies, friendship and love that needs to be navigated by these two soulmates who seem like they couldn't be more different but compliment each other so well. 

Based on a book called "Mo Dao Zu Shi," it took two-and-a-half years to get this show through pre-production thanks to not just the writing process but the careful casting and set design that had to go into making every single moment on-screen look perfect. The cast didn't need just to earn their lines; they had to be trained in the martial arts and even the art of etiquette because they're all important aspects of the world these characters live in. All of this, in the end, made them rich and alive on screen. Maybe that's why the show has proven to be so popular. Or maybe it's just the great job done by actors like Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo.
