Most people in the West are familiar with several sets of deities. There's the monotheistic God of the Abrahamic faiths: an all-loving, all-seeing, jealous but doting figure who takes care of just about everything. There are the many gods and goddesses of the classical tradition, who each enjoy a portfolio that covers some portion of the human experience, and who experience our vulnerabilities and frailties magnified a thousand times. 

There are the Norse gods, who have been recently made familiar in pop culture again thanks to Marvel's re-purposing of them as superheroes. Then there are the many Hindu gods who make up the great boss of deities himself, Brahma, with all of his various minions and representations.

However, one culture that many of us know lamentably little about when it comes to their ancient deities is that of China. This is a shame, since - as in all other areas of human endeavor - China has a pretty darn fascinating culture around its ancient religions. Part of the lack of knowledge is due to communism, which did its very best to expunge such things, but part of it is just that we don't trade stories as much as we should.
